A root canal is a procedure that is performed by a dentist or root canal specialist. Its purpose is to remove infected pulp from the interior of the affected tooth. This procedure can become necessary for patients of all ages and is recommended for a variety of reasons.

The dental infection that causes patients to visit their oral care professional can result from repeated dental work, trauma, deep decay or a chip in the tooth that allows bacteria to invade it. If a patient fails to address these conditions in a timely manner, pain or severe abscesses can result. In the most severe cases, infection can spread throughout the body.

Fortunately, modern dental advances have been made that allow most patients to only experience minimal pain and discomfort during and after root canal treatment.

When is a Root Canal Treatment Necessary?

One of the primary purposes of a root canal procedure is to save the affected tooth. Your oral care professional will only recommend it if he or she believes that it is the best way to relieve the serious infection or decay that you are experiencing. In general, candidates for root canal treatment will answer “yes” to one or more of the following questions:
  • Do you have severe tooth pain?
  • Have you noticed unusual swelling or discoloration around one of your teeth?
  • Are you experiencing sensitivity to hot or cold?
  • Do you have severe jaw pain?
  • Do you have inexplicable swelling of your face or head?

These symptoms point to the presence of a severe tooth infection. However, the only way to truly know if you need a root canal is to meet face-to-face with a dental care professional such as the compassionate and experienced staff at Avana Smile Design.

How Root Canal treatment works?

Root canals are not right for every patient, and only a competent professional can determine the best intervention for a specific case. To accomplish this, they will ask you about your symptoms and will then perform an examination of your mouth accompanied by X-rays to check the shape of the root canals and to identify areas of infection around the tooth and bone. If the results indicate that you need a root canal, you will set up an appointment either with your dentist or with a root canal doctor.

Preparing for Root Canal

Before that day, you should begin to take the antibiotics that have been prescribed to diminish the infection. Get a good night’s sleep, and do all you can to strengthen your immune system before the procedure. Make preparations ahead of time, including having soft foods and ice on hand and getting any over-the-counter or prescription medications you will need.

Procedure Day

On the day of your procedure, your doctor will numb the area with anesthetic injections. A rubber dam will be placed to remove excess fluid, and you can expect to need to keep your mouth open for an extended period of time. Let your doctor know if you need a break at any point during the procedure.

In order to gain access to the infected pulp, your Avana Smile Design specialist will need to use a small drill to make an opening in the crown (outside) of your tooth, through the enamel and into the dentin. Once the affected area is exposed, the doctor will use tiny instruments called files to clean all of the diseased pulp and nerve tissue out of your tooth.

To minimize the chances of infection, the specialist will clean the tooth and then inject an antibacterial solution into the area. Finally, the doctor will create a temporary filling and seal the tooth with a substance called gutta-percha, a natural latex made from the sap of rubber trees. The entire root canal procedure generally takes one or two visits to complete.

Post-Procedure Crown

In most cases, patients will need to have a porcelain crown, or post and crown installed over the tooth after it has been hollowed out during the root canal operation. If your procedure was performed by an endodontist, you will probably be able to return to your general dentist to have the dental appliance made and fitted.

Advantages and Disadvantages of the treatment

There are many reasons why you should not put off getting a root canal if your doctor recommends that you have one. They include the following:
  • Relief from pain.
  • Prevention of complications such as worsening infection, abscess and damage to the oral bone.
  • Preservation of your tooth without the need for extraction and unsightly gap between remaining teeth.
  • More affordable than dental implants.
As with any medical intervention, there are also potential downsides to getting a root canal. They include:
  • The procedure is not 100 percent guaranteed to be effective. You may require additional work in the future if the infection is not totally cleaned out the first time.
  • This treatment hollows out the tooth, leaving it weak and brittle. As a result, it must be bolstered with a crown or post, adding additional time and cost.
  • The procedure can take more than one visit and represents an investment in both time and money.
  • It may cause discomfort to the mouth and jaw.
  • Your tooth may darken or discolor after the root canal.

Root canals are effective dental solutions to address severe infections and preserve your tooth for years or perhaps even a lifetime. The Dental services professionals at Avana Smile Design are here to answer any questions you may have about the procedure and will guide you through every step of the process.

What to expect after a Root Canal Therapy?

Now that your Avana Smile Design doctor has completed your root canal, there are several things you can do to ensure minimum pain and effective healing. These include:

  • Since you may feel mild, temporary pain in your tooth and tenderness in your jaw area once the numbing medication wears off, follow the recommendations for over-the-counter or prescription narcotics made by your root canal doctor.
  • Eat softer foods for the next few days.
  • Avoid chewing on the affected area for the next few days.
  • Be careful when brushing the tooth for the next few days.
  • If you experience severe pain, contact your root canal specialist right away.
  • For the long term, continue to maintain good oral hygiene, including brushing at least twice a day, flossing and visiting your dentist regularly.
Most people actually find that getting a root canal is not nearly as frightening or painful as they feared it would be. Being diligent about both short- and long-term after-care can help to ensure the success and longevity of the procedure.
